Keeping It Casual
A guy I am casually seeing talks about other girls he has sex with while in bed with me. Do I have a right to be offended ?*
Occasionally I see a question on Reddit that is too good not to answer. One that feels sincere and relatable — not just the usual absurdity driven engagement bait.
Well, dear Reddit writer, thankfully for you (and the entire premise of much of the internet) you are allowed to be offended at ANYTHING! I am not a fan of the term casual sex because casual can mean so many things — “without definite or serious intention; careless or offhand; relaxed; non-committal” — I worry people are often entering “casual” situations with differing term definitions, and avoiding clarifying conversations because, well, its casual.
But whether casual applies here and whether or not that is a good thing isn’t the question. The question is — why share this experience and your body with someone who you can’t share your feelings with? You two do not have to be bound for something serious for this man to respect you and show you some consideration.
My advice? Communicate your feelings — clearly. Use I statements. There are people out there for whom this wouldn’t be a problem — but you aren’t one of them and if he wants access to you, casual or otherwise, he will respect that.
